Discipleship and The Commands of Jesus
In Matthew 28:19 and 20 we hear from the heart of God. He is calling you and me to a major work, not just to a pew! He is telling all Christians that we have a task. In Victorious Christian Living International’s book, “Discipleship God’s Clarion Call”, we are confronted with what true discipleship is. Let’s look at those two verses:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
We first are confronted with the command to GO, we then are told to baptize and finally, we learn what true discipleship consists of, TEACHING OTHERS TO OBEY THE COMMANDS OF JESUS!
I was personally awakened to this wonderfully immense task. I immediately went to Google and looked up Commands of Jesus and I learned that in the synoptic Gospels there are 49 separate commands that Jesus gives each believer to follow. It struck me that if Christian discipleship is to be real these commands must be a part. I did not want to be a hypocrite so I looked at what our ministry was calling church curriculum, SALT, seven areas of life training. I made a declaration that we must line up all seven areas against the 49 commands of Jesus. I even said that if any of those seven areas did not answer at least one of the commands that we would take it out of the church curriculum and to my joy all 49 commands appeared somewhere in all of our SALT materials. I now know that God went before us and for the past 30 plus years we have been doing REAL DISCIPLESHIP.
As a member of our VCLi Partner Member community you can go to Discipleship God’s Clarion Call. In the Conclusion document you can see all 49 commands and where they are addressed in the corresponding Seven Areas of Life Training workbook.
